Marine Solutions Inc. Electronic Oil Injection System Application Guidelines 2/01/2002 Purpose: For repair or avoidance of oil gear failures on 1989 thru 2000 Mercury and Mariner 2.0 and 2.5 L, 135-200 hp, V-6 outboard engines.
Theory of Operation: The electronic controller receives an engine speed signal from the voltage regulator and a pump speed signal from the rotation sensor. The controller constantly compares the two signals and varies the voltage to the electric motor to change the speed of the pump and provide the correct oil ratio at all speeds.
Oil Gear Failure Symptoms: 1. The oil warning horn beeps on and off continuously. 2. The oil warning horn beeps on and off intermittently at higher engine speeds. 3. Check other possible causes such as low oil level, disconnected wires, water in the EFI water separating fuel filter, or failed oil pump rotation sensor.
Test for Oil Gear Failure: 1. Set a multi-meter on the frequency (Hz) setting. 2. Pull the connector insulation back on the blue-white rotation sensor wire. 3. Attach the red multi-meter lead to the exposed connection. 4. Attach the black multi-meter lead to a ground on the engine. 5. Start the engine using 50:1 premixed fuel and oil and ample cooling water supply. 6. The oil gear is stripped if the multi-meter shows no frequency or erratic frequency. Frequency should be: 8Hz at 1000 rpm, 17Hz at 2000 rpm, and 33 Hz at 4000 rpm.
Engine Requirements: 1. Engine must have no cylinder damage. Verify with compression test or compression leak-down test. Results should not vary by more than 15% from low to high reading. 2. Tachometer, or tachometer output on voltage regulator, must be working. 3. Oil pump, bearing, and rotation sensor must be in good condition or must be replaced. 4. The oil warning system must working. 5. Note that an engine running satisfactorily on pre-mixed fuel and oil probably does not have cylinder damage.
Electronic Oil Injection Characteristics:
The oil warning horn sounds whenever the speed of the oil pump cannot keep up with the speed of the engine for any reason. The horn may sound briefly at start-up and at rapid de-acceleration. This normal response demonstrates the sensitivity of the protection circuit in the Electronic Oil Injection system.
Warranty:
Two year limited warranty to original owner for recreational use.
